While stuck at home recovering from pneumonia I’ve been putting together my fall bucket list! If you haven’t already seen it check it out here. While I haven’t been able to get out and do much one thing that inspired me on Pinterest this week was this adorable Halloween quilt pattern. While I do sew my sewing machine, unfortunately, met a tragic end which is still too painful to discuss lol and has currently not been replaced. So I decided to let the creative juices flow and I knew immediately it would make adorable mini canvas paintings. I knew I would enjoy painting them plus anyone can use my Halloween Painting Tutorial to paint with their own kids or host a Halloween paint party this year!
Materials Needed For the Tutorial
I pulled these tiny canvases from one of the totes in my craft room. Broke out the paints and paintbrushes and was ready to get down to work. Here’s a list of everything you’ll need though for this Halloween painting tutorial. You should be able to get all of these on a quick trip to your local Walmart or craft store. Or for a budget-friendly take a lot of this stuff you can even get at the dollar tree or your dollar store these days! Otherwise, you can click on the links below and order everything from Amazon.
- Mini Canvas
- Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Table Cloth
- Cups of Water
- Paper Towels
- Trace Paper (optional)
- Ribon
- Hot Glue Gun
Halloween Painting Tutorial Steps
Step 1: Setting Up
Painting these adorable canvases is quick and easy. The first step is to gather your supplies and set up your workspace. Now if you’re not already set up to paint at home check out my post on simple canvas painting at home to get a guide to starting. I highly recommend using a plastic table cloth to cover your work surface. These can be picked up at the dollar tree or the party section at Walmart for $1 to $2. They will save you a lot of clean-up time as all you have to do is wrap everything you don’t want to save up in the table cloth and throw it away. After laying out your table cloth you’ll want to set out all your supplies including a cup of water to wash your brushes in.
Step 2: Outline Your Painting
The second step is to outline your canvases. You can freehand your own design or if you like mine, join my mailing list below and get a free traceable copy of mine. If you are free handing your own design use a pencil and get your designs sketched out. If you’re using my traceable you’ll need to print it out. Then lay your tracing paper on the canvas and line up your pattern with the canvas. Use a pen or hard leaded pencil (mechanical pencils don’t usually allow you to apply enough pressure) and trace the outlines of your selected design. If you are hosting a party I recommend you trace all of the canvases out beforehand to allow your artist to simply select their canvas and get to painting.
Step 3: Paint Away
Step three is the fun one. Paint away. If you are painting multiple canvases you can switch between the canvases to allow the first paint color to dry before moving on to the next color. However, if you are only painting one canvas you can use a hair drier to dry your canvas between layers or paint colors. Once you have all your canvases painted you have to wait for them to dry before moving on.
Step 4: Create Your Hanger
Once your canvases are dry you can move on to step four creating your hanger. To create a wall hanger out of your canvases as I did you’ll need a hot glue gun and a piece of ribbon. First, form a loop at the top of your ribbon and glue it in place. This will be your hanger to place over a nail or hook. Next, you will glue the canvases to the ribbon. I chose to do all of mine in a straight line. However, if you wanted to mix it up you could glue them to the ribbon at different angles. Once glued on allow to dry for a few minutes and then you are done!
Mixing up the Painting for Different Design Options
The beautiful thing about this “quilt block” theme is the design options can be changed up in several different ways. Sign up for my mailing list below and get a free traceable download of the basic geometric designs I used. Or you can get more creative and detailed and add shadowing for the more advanced painter. You can also use the traceable on a large canvas and have a quilt painting that includes all the designs. The project can also be broken up and you can paint one a day for daily me time! No matter how you do it I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as me and my daughter did!
