DIY Party Invitation

Remember when you were a kid and party time came around? Didn’t matter if it was your birthday, Christmas, your baptism the excitement you felt when you went to the store, you picked out the invitations, and then you went home and you dutifully filled out each and every one. Then you handed them out or dropped them in the mail and eagerly awaited the big day. In today’s fast-paced world who has time for that? So let’s talk about a DIY Party Invitation that is much more personal and can even be digitalized for this modern-day.

The Etsy Invitation

The first time I tried to make my own party invitation it was a little less DIY and was actually to coin my work mom, a Do It Etsy. That’s back when I was a little less organized and felt more like one of those movie moms who looked like she should be on a meme. I was working 50+ hours a week, volunteering at the school, on the PTO, going to ball practice, and had no clue what I was making for dinner. Don’t get me wrong I’m still crazy busy but at least now I have my planner to keep me organize and make sure I have something planned for dinner so we don’t starve.

When birthday time rolled around a couple of years ago I defiantly didn’t have time to sit and fill out 40 birthday party invitations. That’s when one of my BFFs introduced me to the Do It Etsy style invitation. Etsy is full of invitation options, from custom ordered and handmade to printable and downloadable. All you have to do is search for what you’re looking for. If you don’t know where to start I recommend Studio20Designs for the printable/downloadable ones. I have purchased from her several times over the years and she always has the cutest designs. She not only offers invitations but also banners and other printables for your party as well.

DIY Invitation

Now that I’m a little more organized and defiantly have more time for creativity I like designing my own invitations. While there are lots of design programs out there, I love Canva. I currently use Canva for all of my graphic design work. If you don’t already use it head over and check Canva out now. While they do offer a pro edition for a monthly fee designing an invitation can easily be done using a free account! I personally only upgraded to the pro version to be able to quickly and easily resize my planner pages.

Create Your Invitation

Once logged into Canva simply click the Create a Design button in the upper right-hand corner. Select custom dimensions and then specify your size. I used 4 x 6 inches and I’ll explain why after we are done designing our invitation.

Designing Your Invitation

Once you’ve selected your dimensions Canva will take you to the design space and a blank design. From here you can explore the templates they already have ready for use or upload your own photographs and create something yourself. Got your design completed? Ready to send your invitation out? Great! Then simply download your invitation to your computer or device. Now all that’s left is for you to decide how to distribute it.

Sending Your Invitation

DIY Party Invitation

Now that you have your invitation, whether you got it from Etsy or you designed it yourself, you have to decide how to send it. For my recent DIY paint party I simply sent the invite via text. You can also print the invitations or share them on social media! In today’s digital age sharing your invitation via picture message or some other type of dm is obviously the fastest. However, if you want something you can send out or hand out printing is the way to go!

Printing your invitation can be as simple as using your home computer and printer. Want another way to get a great looking invitation though? Get it printed! Remember when I told you I was designing my invitation as a 4×6 and I’d tell you way later? Well here’s the why! Get your invitations printed as a photo! Take your design to your local Walmart or CVS for kiosk printing. Or even better use snapfish.com and order them without even leaving the house!

  1. Wow, thank you so much for these detailed suggestions and tutorials. The ideas are great and I am also looking for some templates for my daughter’s birthday invitation design.
Although there are many ways to do it online these days and even cards are sent online, I really still like to meet face-to-face and send cards or post.
BTW, I like the font in the heading sections in this article. It was really beautiful. Can you tell me what font it is?

    • Thank you! I really like sending or handing out an actual invitation too! I feel like its more personable.

I have not idea what the font is I’m afraid. It came with the website design.
